The last few days have been challenging yet rewarding.  The american crew of Myself, dane, tanner, nate, cory lopez, gravies, tothy, and Blak jones, got stuck behind in the shuffle across european countries.  Ten minutes short of our Acores flight, we were forced to spend the night in Lisbon.  Our reward was the beauty of the acores.

This place is stunning.  It looks like Canary islands, with it’s rugged coastline, crossed with the tropic vibe of hawaii.  The waves and water look similar to hawaii being uber blue and crystal clear.  The wave here for the comp is challenging to say the least, wonky and messy, but we’re still keeping the psyche on with tons of freesurfs and lots of tourist activities to the lakes/hotsprings and great food of the acores.  here’s a few snapshots of the last day or two!

We have been itching to find new technique angles with our surfing. This path led us down a road of watching our surfing in reverse. Pat being a goofy foot, and dane and I being regular foots. Trippy stuff, but exciting to see different stuff different ways. This podcast was one we made for Lowers this year that we have been switching in the mirror. The unpredictability of France is something that makes it different from any other place in the world. From day to day the weather can change with the swift unforgivingness of a knife’s edge. From topless sunbathing to umbrellas and indoor activities, it all happens in a week on the shorelines of France. Along with the weather’s change is the swell. Last year for example during this very week we were pulling out step up boards and grabbing rail through 8 to 10 foot kegs. This year the story is more that of a normal WQS one. Each and every day the contest has been a rollercoaster of low tide and high tide blues. Each time the contest directors calling on two to three heats before the tides became to extreme in each direction. I caught the unlucky break in a high tide heat exchange where Leo Neves got one last good score within seconds of the buzzer. Thats the way the cookie crumbles sometimes in conditions like those though. Dane is coming up today in what should be a fun heat with tonino benson and two others. The swell is promising to come up through the day so dane has everything from his groveller to shortboard in anticipation for what shows for his heat.

Along with the excitement of the contest we also received two European Al Merrick surfboards each. We each experimented alittle bit with our normal designs and templates. Dane is trying out a Proton swallow tail that is an inch smaller than his normal board. Patrick went for a older template MBM with tons of V in the tail. I am trying out the FORT KNOX model but with a swallow tail! now all we need are some waves to wax up the new sleds and try em out! I threw some artwork on  my board that spiced up the white bottom.

We have also been jamming with our room mate Nate Yeomans and good friend Masatoshi ohno. Helps to break up the days and is always fun to let a couple of riffs slide up and down the guitar. Masatoshi taught Pat a mental Japanese jam. DOMO ARIGATO!!! LEGEND!

This is me...giving my best EDDIE impression

Me & Drew Brophy and the Board of Boards!

After listening to the piece of mind album for the gazillionth time just  yesterday I realized that the time had come. I needed to bottle the froth of EDDIE, as well as the band of Iron Maiden and encapsulate a piece of artwork on one of my boards. It took no more than two practice sketches to realize that I wasn’t going to be the mastermind behind this creation. So I went down and had a talk with Drew Brophy. Drew use to draw a lot on the old school …Lost boards when the Lopez brothers and company were banging out massive airs and slashes. Always as a grom I would see those boards with their artwork in the magazines and secretly I wanted one. My brothers and I always see Drew in the water surfing around town and the guy still rips! Very Rock n Roll! Well my dream finally came true. After talking with Drew for a little bit he let me know that he as well was an IRON MAIDEN fan. and so it began… I asked for the Trooper Eddie, and Drew said he thought he could make it work. And Make it work he did!!! I have never seen anything as hessian as this piece of art. I slept facing my new board so that every  morning I would wake up and see the power of MAIDEN. I can’t wait to give this board a rip and go for a Flight of Icarus BOOOST!!!!

The surf has just picked up here in the sun drenched surf town of Lacanau, France. We just picked up a couple of the european distributor Al Merrick Surboards that look insane. Swell is on the way. Sun shines from 7 in the morning till 10 at night. Bread is like candy. Why can’t I  be french? haha.
